Message from our CEO

Hajir Hajji, Action’s CEO

We celebrated our 30th anniversary in 2023 in true Action style: growth, job creation, and millions of satisfied customers.

For Action, 2023 was an exciting and successful year. We celebrated our 30th anniversary as a company. I am proud of what we have achieved in such a short time.

Customers come first

Action would not be where it is today without our customers. Their satisfaction drives us all forward and is the basis for our continued success – also in 2023.

More and more customers are discovering Action. On average, we welcomed 15.3 million customers a week to our stores. We were also able to reduce 2,500 prices, more than 40% of our entire range. Action is a great shopping destination for everyone, thanks to our attractive and flexible formula.

Last year, we opened our first store in Bratislava, Slovakia – Action’s 11th European market. By the end of the year, we had already opened 15 stores in Slovakia. In Germany, we passed the milestone of 500 stores, while in Poland, we passed 300 stores.

It is always amazing and honourable to see customers queuing in front of one of our new stores. It makes me realise how important it is to never take our customers for granted and to put them first in everything we do.

Our people are Action

Our stores were again busier than ever in 2023. I cannot express how grateful I am to the colleagues who make Action possible. The special anniversary bonus we awarded to them is a token of our sincere appreciation.

In 2023, we added 8,988 new jobs, further increasing our significance as a responsible employer providing stable jobs and income. By the end of the year, we employed 69,040 people. We continued to focus on internal development through training and internal promotions. Developing talent internally allows us to maintain our unique Action DNA while continuing to grow rapidly.

More highlights

Other important developments also deserve mention, such as the recognition we received in France as the favourite retail brand of the French people (Enseigne Préférée des Français 2023) and the opening of two new distribution centres with Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Methodology (BREEAM) ‘Excellent’ status. We won numerous product awards and introduced our very first circular product made from our own recycled plastic. We now offer online shopping in Belgium as well as the Netherlands, where customers can access a different range of products supplementary to what we have in-store.

Sustainability

In 2023, we again made progress in implementing our sustainability programme. Last year, we increased our CO2 equivalent emissions reduction target for our own operations (scope 1 and 2) to 60% by the end of 2030 compared to our baseline year 2021. As a result of various initiatives, we are well on track, having already achieved a 46% reduction by the end of 2023.

We have also calculated our indirect CO2 equivalent emissions (scope 3) for our baseline year 2021. In 2024, we will set reduction targets in line with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), to which we have committed.

Finally, Action plays a key role in society, and we are keen to contribute where help is needed. We have extended our cooperation with and significantly contributed to SOS Children's Villages and the Johan Cruyff Foundation.

I am proud to be part of Action.

Best regards,

Hajir Hajji
