Partnership
We consider ourselves a part and partner of society. Therefore, we ensure that our business activities and tax compliance meet ethical, societal, and sustainable development related expectations.
As a large organisation we understand that we play an important role in society, and that is why we want to demonstrate that we support international and local initiatives that contribute to children being able to grow up in a safe and healthy environment.
Strategy
The focus for 2023 is to move towards GRI 2017 or CSRD compliancy (pending final CSRD requirements for tax). We will also increase the support of our current partners, SOS Children’s Villages and the Johan Cruyff Foundation.
Action hero coaches
Action hero coaches into action for Johan Cruyff foundation
Our partnership with the Johan Cruyff Foundation means we can help get more children involved in sports and exercise. One of the ways we did that in 2022 was by training 14 Dutch Store Managers to become Action hero coaches during a two-day training course at the Johan Cruyff Institute. Together with their store team, the 14 Store Managers devised and wrote a plan for a sporting event for the children near their store.

Tax
We also consider paying taxes a way of making a positive impact in the communities where we operate. Action is proud of the fact that by paying our fair share of taxes in the countries where we operate, we contribute to economic and social development in these countries.
In 2022, Action collected and paid approximately €1.7 billion of various taxes.
We have a tax policy that consists of six main tax principles: governance, tax risk management, compliance, relationships with tax authorities, business rationale and tax transparency and reporting. This tax policy applies to all employees of Action who are dealing with tax matters and it applies to all taxes. Through applying the Action tax policy in our behaviour with respect to taxes, Action aims to play a role in creating a stable, secure and sustainable society.
In 2022, tax was designated as a material topic for GRI reporting. We will develop our disclosures on tax payments and policies in accordance to the GRI 207 standard and the CSRD. Within Action, tax is the responsibility of the CFO and from an operational perspective, the Head of Tax.
Action believes that a responsible approach to tax is an integral aspect of doing business and we see the fulfilment of our tax obligations as part of creating long-term value for all stakeholders.
Support of initiatives for Ukraine
The war in Ukraine affects us deeply. As a retailer operating in many different countries in Europe, it is our responsibility to act. That is why Action decided to donate 1 million euros to UNICEF to help people, especially children, affected by the conflict in Ukraine and in neighbouring countries.

We also joined forces with local foundations. We are deeply touched by the many initiatives within our organisation to help the growing number of Ukrainian refugees in the neighbouring countries of Poland and the Czech Republic, and also in other European countries.
In this video, Suzanne Laszlo, Director of UNICEF, thanks Action for the support we have given and she explains what UNICEF can do with this large sum.

In February 2022, Action entered into a three-year partnership with the Johan Cruyff Foundation. The partnership enables us to assist the Johan Cruyff Foundation in its activities to help children around the world to enjoy sports and play. We plan to partner and co-invest in several new ‘Cruyff courts’, which benefit the local neighbourhoods and communities through improved quality of life.
As a pilot in this collaboration, Action involved 14 Store Managers, who took a training course at the Johan Cruyff Institute to become Action hero coaches. They organised sporting events in different locations in the Netherlands. Together with Johan Cruyff Foundation they supported local children with sports activities, improving their health and well-being.
To make an important impact in the countries where we source our products and operate, we partner with the global charity SOS Children’s Villages. They work to keep families together, to provide alternative care when needed, to support young people on their path to independence and to advocate for the rights of children. Since 2018, we have sponsored a child or village in Asia for every one of our stores and DCs. To increase local involvement, we also donate to local programmes in the European countries where we have an office. As our store network grows, so does the number of villages we support.
