Sustainable packaging

As the fastest growing non-food discounter in Europe, we bring a large number of packaging materials on to the market. We embrace our responsibility to reduce the waste impact of packaging by making choices with regard to alternative packaging, using different materials, less packaging material or using another design.

In 2022, we achieved our target of 100% recyclable packaging in our private label assortment. By 2025, all our packaging excluding A-brands, will have to be recyclable. Additionally, we have set a weight reduction target of 25% for the primary packaging of our fixed assortment (private and white label)  by 2025 compared to our baseline of 2019.

Progress made

In 2022, we successfully eliminated all black plastic and PVC based packaging from our private label primary packaging. We are proud to announce that we have achieved last year’s goal of 100% private label packaging recyclable by 2022. We expect that the new Action guidelines on sustainable packaging will show positive outcomes in the upcoming years’ reports with a significant effect on achieving our targets.

We have launched our policy on sustainable packaging. The dos and don’ts have been well-received and are extensively used in purchasing decisions. We expect long-term positive results from the implementation of these guidelines. We are also piloting a Sustainability Dashboard, which will provide insight into packaging details and materials, and other product details.

We further improved the collaboration between the Buying and Quality team with the intention of stimulating innovation in finding new sustainable packaging options and the reduction of non-recyclable materials and virgin plastics. This is a good step towards achieving our goal to have 100% recyclable packaging by 2025.

Action also introduced initiatives for reducing packaging in multiple product categories to achieve our goal of 25% less primary packaging of our fixed assortment in 2025. Our private label product, Super Finn Washing Machine Cleaner in the category of Laundry & Cleaning, is a good example. We moved from two (250ml) bottles to one 500ml light weight bottle, resulting in a reduction of packaging of 6,300kg/year. In the snack category, we are working with suppliers to make the transition from ‘non-recycle ready’ to ‘recycle ready’ packaging that weighs less.

Management of material topic

The management of the Quality and Buying department are most involved in strategy formulation for sustainable packaging, although it also requires cross-functional collaboration with other departments. The management of this material topic is guided by the sustainable Packaging Policy, which helps our buyers in purchasing decisions. We have also appointed two new Packaging Specialists in 2022 to help guide our buying teams in pragmatic improvement steps.

We will accelerate progress in achieving our targets in 2023 by focusing on intensifying the collaboration with all stakeholders, and optimising our supplier manual. We also want to update our design guidelines, and gear up the Buying and Quality team with the knowledge and information from a packaging point of view. We will also focus on bringing correct information and data, and increase consumer awareness and claims on sustainable packaging through marketing. Action will remove or move away from PVC based packaging and black plastic in our primary packaging.

Remaining targets

The collaboration with and between internal and external stakeholders is extremely important in this material topic. Especially in the relationship with our suppliers and customers, through open communications about the possibilities to improve and innovate together. Moreover, Action is always looking for new collaborations to increase our knowledge about sustainable packaging.

The role of stakeholders

We are developing a dashboard to monitor all of the weights of the packaging of all articles. In 2023, our packaging technologists will conduct workshops with all 14 buying teams to highlight the biggest articles and product groups that use packaging. From this listing, the teams will agree reduction plans and packaging upgrades to start reducing our packaging use.
