Waste management and recycling

Action’s waste strategy is focused on the correct separation of current waste streams and reducing remaining residual waste. This means that better standardisation of the sorting process is needed in our DCs and training of our employees, especially in the Returned goods department. Our ambition is to start annual audits with business partners on waste processing.

Correct separation of waste

Action increased the amount of recycled cardboard and plastic and took steps towards further waste reduction. We finalised the contracts with the right parties for waste processing in our warehouses. In addition, improved agreements have been made with the waste broker about cooperation and the correct sorting and processing of all waste streams. For this purpose, we made country specific waste streams to align them with the legislation of that country. Action also initiated its first waste management audits in France. Launching the waste management portal for all DCs gives us the perfect stepping stone for improving waste management in 2023. The online tool provides the necessary data on the quantities of waste types, the costs and revenues per warehouse, and per country.

We want to strengthen the collaboration with our waste processing partners, fine tune the portal with data on waste processing and add CO² emissions to actions related to waste processing. Action wants to further improve the correct separation of the current waste streams into the right categories in alignment with country specific legislation. For the majority of the Action countries this will mean an increase of residual waste by 5%.

Throughout the year, when stores are refurbished, enlarged or relocated, we also demount, collect, sort and store racking for reuse or recycling. Store checkouts are refit, restyled to comply with current format standards and reused after a store refurbishment. In 2022, we refurbished 24 stores with materials previously used in other stores.
